I began this booklet by researching and gathering the content I wanted to include. After looking through countless articles and background information on Secretariat’s Triple Crown, I struggled at first to decide what story I wanted the booklet to tell. Watching the race videos changed everything. I was completely captivated by the intensity of each race and the way the announcer narrated them, and that inspired me to build the booklet around the audio transcripts. Since accurate transcripts don’t really exist online, creating them myself added a unique layer to the project. Once I chose that direction, I transcribed the races, collected imagery, and experimented with several early styles that used color and bold typography. After refining the visual approach, I created a flat plan to map out the structure and decide what content lived on each page. Each chapter opens with a traditional article layout to introduce the race, followed by images and the transcribed audio arranged in ways that convey movement and momentum. After completing the final layouts, I had the booklet perfect bound at a local printer to give it a polished and elevated finish.
